9 Summer Essentials

The sun is in the sky, and the sea is in my sight. You know what that means: beach day!

But before you run off for some fun in the sun, here are my 9 Summer Essentials to make your outing a success:

1. Canvas Bag: I always keep mine packed and ready for those last-minute trips.
2. Beach Towel: because sand gets everywhere.
3. Swimsuit: because what’s a beach day without running into the waves?!
4. Sun Protection: protect your skin, it’s your best asset. Make sure you reapply hourly! And wear a broad-brimmed hat to keep your face safe from the sun – who wants wrinkles??
5. Hydration: do I even need to explain this one? Drink more water!
6. Waterproof Mascara: the little extra touches are everything.
7. Shades: because they give your look some attitude and protect your eyes from the sun.
8. Beach reads: catch up on your summer reading list! Do you want to know what my favorite books are? Let me know on Facebook
9. Flip flops: for the trek to your fave beach spot and home after your day in the sun.

Now you’re all ready! I hope you have fun on your beach day.  Be safe and don’t forget to show me your summer essentials using #OliveOylLoves on Instagram and Facebook!

We All Scream For Ice Cream!

Happy July, Everyone!

I can’t believe how fast this year is going by. But I’m so glad it’s finally July because July means BBQs, fireworks and National Ice Cream Month –mmmm. In order to celebrate properly, I whipped up a very special treat in the kitchen: spinach ice cream!

Finally, a sweet treat I don’t feel too guilty about giving to Swee’ Pea. And of course, it’s Popeye’s favorite flavor so I have to be careful he doesn’t finish it all in one go.  Hmmm- maybe we should change the old saying to – we all scream for SPINACH ice cream. LOL

Here’s the recipe I followed thanks to Around My Family Table:

Ingredients:

  • 3/4 cup half & half
  • ½ cup agave nectar
  • 2/3 cup nonfat powdered milk
  • 2 cups spinach, lightly packed
  • 1 ½ tbsp. vanilla
  • 2 ½ – 3 cups of ice

Combine all ingredients in a blender and blend till smooth. Freeze to give a firmer consistency.

If you make your own spinach ice cream, I want to see it! Show me by posting on Facebook or Instagram using the hashtag #OliveOylLoves!

Olive Loves Yoga: Here Comes The Sun

There was a lot of chatter this weekend about the Supermoon that lit up the sky on Saturday night, August 9. I admit it was pretty incredible! Scientists refer to a Supermoon as a “perigee moon,” which occurs when the moon is at its closest point in its orbit around Earth. When this happens, the moon looks larger. The next Supermoon is taking place on September 10, 2014, so mark your calendars.

After all the attention being given to the moon, I started thinking that the sun must be feeling a little left out! So, I reached out to Angela Salveo, Trainer at Hearst Tower in New York City, co-owner of CrossFit Salus and go-to friend for all my health and fitness-related questions. She showed me a wonderful way to salute the sun, so it too can feel appreciated and loved while making me feel strong and supported.

Olive Strikes A Pose

One truth about yoga is this: Yoga looks different on every body. One version of a yoga pose is not better or more advanced than another. Often, yoga beginners worry about the picture of the pose. They want to do the pose “perfectly.” As with most things in life, this always isn’t possible.

One of the (many) benefits of yoga is when you allow yourself to find the ease in your body and mind, the poses will be a lot easier to do.

As a National Strength and Conditioning Association-certified personal trainer, Angela Salveo has taught a variety of group fitness classes, including spinning, boot camp and yoga. She offers some step-by-step instructions for several popular yoga poses.
