Live Olive: Tokyo

Next up in what I hope is a series of global wanderings, I bring to you my dears, Tokyo! Ahhh Tokyo! One of my most favorite spots in the whole wide world, a bustling metropolis with a fascinating history and absolutely innovative artists, designers and fashionistas.

And the food, oh the food. You know the food and me! Sushi, izakaya, delicious grilled meats and seafoods, rice and seaweed and the most beautifully constructed deliciousness perhaps on the planet – taste is one thing, but presentation is entirely another – Tokyo chefs shop the famous fish market for the freshest and most tasty and then create imaginative, exquisite and lovely dishes that never cease to awe and amaze.

Okay, enough about the food.

Once a small village called Edo, Tokyo became a cultural center in Japan very early in its history, a place where artisans of all kinds thrived. Eventually it became the country’s capitol and with good reason.

Tokyo is one of the world’s most fascinating cities. There is the architecture (you must explore the incredible teahouses and treehouses of Tokyo professor Terunobu Fujimori!), the neon, the shimmering glass, the hustle, and the bustle.

There are great contemporary working artists like Murakami and my darling dearest Yoyoi Kusama – who is a polka dot queen, sculptress and painter and performer extraordinaire. Her most recent collaboration with Louis Vuitton is simply, utterly adorable – in the most elegant and sophisticated way of course. Think polka dots on the high fashion runway, crazy color combos and a gleeful creative freedom that doesn’t happen very often at all.

And the clothes!! There are the girls of Harajuku, dressed to the nines (and tens and elevens) and wonderful designers like Yohji Yamamoto and Tsumori Chisato, who always, always stun me with their talent and boundless imagination.

Then there are the gardens and the nightclubs and the karaoke, the musicians and the magic and the towering hotels and fine restaurants and great shops and back alley discoveries and the food (I had to say it again)…and did I mention the hustle and the bustle?

Oh, oh Tokyo!

Olive Loves: Morocco

Sometimes a word becomes more than a word. Instead, it conjures up a place, a smell, a feel, an array of vivid visuals – whole ornate fantasy in the mind.

“Morocco” is one of those words.

More than a mere place or a country,  Morocco is a state of mind, a kind of wonderful, evocative emotion. I am an adventurous gal, as you all know and Morocco is one of the most thrilling spots I can possibly think of, a truly vibrant and strange and surreal landscape of dreams…

Close your eyes. Can’t you just smell the incense and spices, see the sea wave span of sand dunes, the white walled domes, the tiny alleys, the markets, the romance???

Oh the romance!

Ever since I saw the movie, “Casablanca”, (if you have not seen it my dear readers, you must! You must!), Morocco has been to me a place of intrigue and glamour and fabulous 1940s strong-shouldered lady suits and torrid affairs and exotic suspense.

Tangiers, Fez, Agadir, and Marrakech, these are other sublimely names cities of this varied and complex African country.

You know what I would love to do in those mysterious cities of Morocco??

Ride astride camels… do my Marlene Dietrich Silver Screen-era starlet impression, all smoky-eyed and sultry… shop the stalls…eat the incredible food (dates, couscous, lamb!), swim the seas…hike the desert… or merely lay beside blue poolside at one of the many unbelievably decadent 5 star hotels, accommodations that feel more like palaces than resorts.

And what about you, my friends of the worldwide web?

What sort of magic would you create in a place as magical as Morocco?

Olive Goil: Coco Morier

Oh how I love a great pop song!

Take a listen, my dears, to Coco Morier, who is just simply the best at writing utterly infectious ditties for the big stars to sing out loud. Miss Morier is a songwriter and musician whose amazing tracks are exactly the tunes you need for shaking a tail feather on the dance floor.

She is also an avid adventurer like moí, a world explorer and traveler, raised in the wilds of New Mexico and spending time in Berlin before settling in the hills of Los Angeles.

She’s written hits for the likes of Britney Spears and played guitar with Charlotte Gainsbourg, but her new album is all her own and the result is the most gleefully fun collection of tracks you’ve heard in far too long!

So lovelies, let’s dance!

Live Olive: Laura Decker

Laura Decker

As you know I am an avid adventurer and can hoist a sail or saddle a wild pony or shake a tail feather as well as the next girl.

But my dears, let’s do take our hats off to lovelies like Miss Laura Dekker.

Hailing from Holland, Miss D. who is just 16 (!), traveled an amazing 27,000 nautical miles around the world  – all by her lonesome!

This January, Laura completed her truly astounding journey, after multiple stops in ports all around the globe.

As she pulled into her final destination of St. Maartens, the young adventurer said, “I have already learned very much about myself along the way.”

I am certain she has!

On behalf of unstoppable ladies everywhere, I’d like to give Sailor Dekker a hearty salute.

Ahoy my dears! The seas of life await!
