Olive Goil: Alexandra Valenti

These days everyone is a photographer, right? Instagramming, blogging, and smart phone documenting our lives, with an array of apps and filters at our disposal and in the palm of our hand.

But my dears, let us not forget that photography is an art. There are vibrant, imaginative folks who devote all of their time and talents to creating enduring, moving, poignant imagery for the rest of us to enjoy.

So let’s tip our hats and give a sweet curtsey to those who do their thing and do it well. Respect, my dears, it is all about respect.

That is why today’s Olive Goil is the absolutely stunningly talented Alexandra Valenti, an East Coast gal who moved to Austin, Texas, picked up a camera and some paints… and let her mind open wide.

Her photography, blasted, blown-out and beautiful, captures a place and time that seems to exist in a dream – gorgeous landscapes, striking models, vintage clothes…it’s a world I’d love to step right into… and never leave.

Miss Valenti does high fashion shoots with the eye of a country girl, bringing all that high falootin’ fashion swagger – straight back down to earth. Clothes and jewelry seem all the more wearable and more lovely in her photographs, shot in what you can imagine must be an atmosphere of adventure and fun.

And when Miss Alexandra adds her paints to the prints, something thrilling and magical happens. Her bright patterns and illustrated embellishments serve to transform a mere photo of a woman in a dress – to the level of fine and lovely art.

Respect my dears. Respect to Miss Valenti and to all the other photographers, musicians, writers and artists, etc etc… who remind us of the importance of authenticity and true talent… in this crazy, mixed up digital world.

Olive Loves: Morocco

Sometimes a word becomes more than a word. Instead, it conjures up a place, a smell, a feel, an array of vivid visuals – whole ornate fantasy in the mind.

“Morocco” is one of those words.

More than a mere place or a country,  Morocco is a state of mind, a kind of wonderful, evocative emotion. I am an adventurous gal, as you all know and Morocco is one of the most thrilling spots I can possibly think of, a truly vibrant and strange and surreal landscape of dreams…

Close your eyes. Can’t you just smell the incense and spices, see the sea wave span of sand dunes, the white walled domes, the tiny alleys, the markets, the romance???

Oh the romance!

Ever since I saw the movie, “Casablanca”, (if you have not seen it my dear readers, you must! You must!), Morocco has been to me a place of intrigue and glamour and fabulous 1940s strong-shouldered lady suits and torrid affairs and exotic suspense.

Tangiers, Fez, Agadir, and Marrakech, these are other sublimely names cities of this varied and complex African country.

You know what I would love to do in those mysterious cities of Morocco??

Ride astride camels… do my Marlene Dietrich Silver Screen-era starlet impression, all smoky-eyed and sultry… shop the stalls…eat the incredible food (dates, couscous, lamb!), swim the seas…hike the desert… or merely lay beside blue poolside at one of the many unbelievably decadent 5 star hotels, accommodations that feel more like palaces than resorts.

And what about you, my friends of the worldwide web?

What sort of magic would you create in a place as magical as Morocco?

Live Olive: MOON CANYON

Do not forget, my dears, in this new age of world wide webbing and email missives and smart phones and touch screens and the like… to stop, stand still, sit quiet…and smell the roses…

Daffodils, tulips, irises and lilacs, daisies and peonies – flowers have my heart! I am in love with sea and sky, but it is the land and its multicolored vibrant blossoms that grab hold – and don’t let go.

Moon Canyon are masters (mistresses, actually!) of the petal, floral arrangers inspired by everything from literature to country music. I am wowed, floored and awed by their talents and that said – I am so very pleased to introduce Miss Kristen Cassie, Moon Canyon co-founder.

Tell it like it is Miss Cassie!

Q: What drew you to floral art?

A: The flowers. For sure.  When I was in college studying literature I took a part time gig at a flower shop. Flowers demand you to be here now. Working with something so beautiful became meditative and poetic at the same time. Unlike school, which was face-in-a-book/ head-in-the-clouds, my part time job became a bit more visceral for me. I really enjoyed the way I could evoke feeling and emotion through floral arrangements, from both others and myself. I was hooked!

Q: What inspires your work (outside of the flowers themselves)?

A: Oh my gosh, everything! BUT…I will say music has really helped me to find my “voice” if you will as a floral designer. I will hear a song and immediately images of flowers will come to mind. I will want to make something that looks like what that song sounds like. This is one of my favorites to listen to get inspired…

Q: Favorite flower?

A: Daffodil and paper whites. I love bulb flowers. Eternal spring!
