Olive Loves: Fashion Night Out

My dearest, darling readers.

As you know, I adore fashion.  Simply, utterly, overwhelmingly –  adore it.

In fact, I would go as far to say that dressing up and looking divine is one of life’s great pleasures. That is why I am over the moon, sweet friends, to announce that I have been asked to co-host a fabulous Fashion Night Out event, a grand and amazing evening of talented designers, sublime musical entertainment, and all the brightest and the best lights of New York City!  And all in the name of promoting the wonderful clothing and people of the city’s famous Garment District!

That’s right! We are going to have ourselves a ball, all in the name of keeping U.S. designers, American-made. Factories, suppliers, young talent – all of them need our support in making sure the Garment District keeps on keeping on in creating the highest quality clothing for gals like me to don, for events like this.

Take a look at the invite below and be amazed at the gathering of talent.

Am I nervous?

Yes.

Am I excited?

Yes.

Am I honored?

Truly.

I will be sure to keep you all in the loop on the star-studded, perfectly coiffed, fabulously dressed – days and night to come…

Olive Goil: Julia Holter

My, oh my, oh my, my dears!

Do you know how there are moments when you hear a song and the sound of it tears you in two?  Just shatters your little ‘ol heart? The first time I heard the sweet, sweet voice of Julia Holter I felt just that, a sharp splinter glass break in the my chest that moved me in a way I can’t explain.

I know – you think I’m exaggerating. But I am not, my darlings, I swear!

I admit, I may be a bit of a drama queen at times, but take a listen to Miss Holter and I dare you not to feel the same!

The lovely young Julia graduated from prestigious CalArts with a degree in composition (Yes! She is a smarty pants!). Her first album, Tragedy, was released in 2011 and her second album, Ekstasis, followed in 2012.  Both are shimmering, angelic masterworks of synthesizer and electronica and experimental musings and oh dear readers, again, I must say it again – that voice!

Holter sounds like she has just swooped down from above, all diamond bright and beautiful!

Listen my dears… and feel your heart break, in a good way…

Olive Loves: Goldnbones

There are leggings my dears, and then – there are Goldnbones leggings.

The psychedelic creation of artist OwlEyes, these beauties are beyond mere tights/coverings/pants. They are works of weird and wild art, fashion featuring a collage of custom images that range from wide eyes to Shinto deities to Russian sorcery.

Yes. You heard me right my darlings – sorcery and Shinto.

Goldnbones are like nothing you’ve seen before, so grab a pair fast and see what adventures await. Cosmic elegance! Runway religions! Put on those Goldnbones and strut your stuff – let that freak flag fly!

These are wonderfully strange and surreal, my sweet readers – dreams and visions translated into micropoly and spandex, hip hugging goodness!

Live Olive: Tokyo

Next up in what I hope is a series of global wanderings, I bring to you my dears, Tokyo! Ahhh Tokyo! One of my most favorite spots in the whole wide world, a bustling metropolis with a fascinating history and absolutely innovative artists, designers and fashionistas.

And the food, oh the food. You know the food and me! Sushi, izakaya, delicious grilled meats and seafoods, rice and seaweed and the most beautifully constructed deliciousness perhaps on the planet – taste is one thing, but presentation is entirely another – Tokyo chefs shop the famous fish market for the freshest and most tasty and then create imaginative, exquisite and lovely dishes that never cease to awe and amaze.

Okay, enough about the food.

Once a small village called Edo, Tokyo became a cultural center in Japan very early in its history, a place where artisans of all kinds thrived. Eventually it became the country’s capitol and with good reason.

Tokyo is one of the world’s most fascinating cities. There is the architecture (you must explore the incredible teahouses and treehouses of Tokyo professor Terunobu Fujimori!), the neon, the shimmering glass, the hustle, and the bustle.

There are great contemporary working artists like Murakami and my darling dearest Yoyoi Kusama – who is a polka dot queen, sculptress and painter and performer extraordinaire. Her most recent collaboration with Louis Vuitton is simply, utterly adorable – in the most elegant and sophisticated way of course. Think polka dots on the high fashion runway, crazy color combos and a gleeful creative freedom that doesn’t happen very often at all.

And the clothes!! There are the girls of Harajuku, dressed to the nines (and tens and elevens) and wonderful designers like Yohji Yamamoto and Tsumori Chisato, who always, always stun me with their talent and boundless imagination.

Then there are the gardens and the nightclubs and the karaoke, the musicians and the magic and the towering hotels and fine restaurants and great shops and back alley discoveries and the food (I had to say it again)…and did I mention the hustle and the bustle?

Oh, oh Tokyo!
